Biometrics

CBP has successfully implemented facial biometrics into the entry processes at all international airports, known as Simplified Arrival, and into the exit processes at 55 airport locations. CBP also expanded facial biometrics at 39 seaports and all pedestrian lanes at both Southwest Border and the Northern Border ports of entry.

To date, CBP has processed more than 540 million travelers using biometric facial comparison technology and prevented more than 2,000 impostors from entry to the U.S.

OVERVIEW

CBP is leading the way in innovative identity verification efforts through its use of facial biometric comparison technology. The use of this technology allows CBP to make existing travel requirements more efficient thereby creating a more seamless, secure and safer experience for travelers.

The implementation of biometric technology stems from the 9/11 Commission Report which authorized the U.S. Government to use an automated system to record the arrivals and departures of visitors at all air, sea and land ports of entry. As technologies have evolved, facial comparison has proven to be one of the most effective solutions.

Following years of testing and pilots, CBP has successfully operationalized and deployed facial biometric comparison technology, known as the Traveler Verification Service (TVS), to support comprehensive biometric entry and exit procedures in the air, land, and sea environments.

The process works like this:

Protecting our nation, one face at a time

EFFICIENCY MEETS MORE SECURITY

At CBP, we are constantly evolving to meet the security needs of our nation. Biometric Facial Comparison Technology is just one of the many ways we are protecting our borders while delivering a safer, more efficient travel experience. Facial biometrics adds an extra layer of security and further enhances the traveler experience by utilizing a more touch-free technology that streamlines entry procedures.

What travelers say about CBP Biometrics

And that is a fantastic invention to be able to do that, to be able to come into America and to go straight through with the facial to come in through the customs. As far as I’m concerned, the more the better, the better security that we can put universal, the better it can be for all of us.
